1. EVALUATION -The ways my media product challanges conventions

I chose to compare my thriller opening 'Final Cut' with the opening of the film 'To Kill a Mockingbird', I have chosen this as I feel that both these opening title sequences challenge the conventions of other media products.
As the images are relatively abstract they do not give away any major plot points, however, there are seem images the reoccur.

For example in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' there is the reoccuring image of the fob watch, in comparison to this in my thriller opening 'Final Cut' there is the reoccurance of the long corrider, which the audience will realise by the time the film has ended is the corridor of the mental hospital my antagonist escaped from.

I feel that this style of opening is better than the regular openings which give away far too much of the plot within the first few minutes.

Task 2- Evaluation: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

The first still image is from the film ''Girl interrupted' .This image shows one of the main character who is a mental patient in a mental hospital, this is very similar to the character in my film who is also a mental patient. However in my thriller opening the patient is not in a mental hospital anymore as she has escaped. The second still image is of the main character from my thriller opening.

Above is an image of Angelina Jolie starring in the film girl interrupted. To the right is a screen grab form my thriller sequence and is of the main character. The character from girl interrupted can be compared to the character in my thriller; they are both young female who have psychological problems and live or lived in a mental institution. The camera shots are also similar as it is a close up on there face to show there expressions. This character was one of the inspirations for my thriller.

Task 1- Evaluation: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms conventions of real media products?

This is 9 shots from an opening of a film called ' Durham County'.

The first image from the title sequence of Durham county is similar to a screen grab from final cut where we filmed the trees by the canal to give a feel of being in the woods.

The second still from the film Durham country is quite similar to our film 'Final cut'; this is because it is an image of a doll, in my thriller opening i also used a doll to give a creepy effect also a sense of immaturity which relates to the storyline of the character being a mentally ill patient. The doll in the still image of Durham county looks quite evil and creepy just like the one in my thriller opening. In my thriller the doll has a disfigured face which is similar to the doll in Durham county. The only difference would be that the doll in my thriller is in a canal whereas the doll in this thriller opening is standing up.

The third still image was of a basket with a red substance by the side, this still image actually has very little similarities to the a still image from my thriller opening. The only thing that is similar is the use of the colour red which we used in the scene with the red balloon in the canal.

The fourth still image is similar to m thriller opening because it has a the title running over the actual opening of the thriller. There is nothing much more that can be compared to this screen grab to my thriller screen grab.

The fifth screen grab could be similar to my thriller opening because it shows a man who is in some sort of institution which is similar to the character from my thriller opening who is also came from a mental institution.

The sixth screen grab is not similar to any of the screen grabs from my thriller opening. The only similarity is again the use of the colour red.

The seventh screen grab is of some red roses in the water, this is similar to one of the screen grabs from my thriller opening, which was the doll in the water. The doll in the water was meant to symbolise immaturity and typical mental behaviour because the dolls face is disfigured.

The eighth screen grab from the film durham county is of a man running in the woods but there is some light behind him. This gives off a eery feel. In my thriller opening i did a shot of a similar thing , i filmed the sunlight streaming through the trees.

In the ninth screen grab from the Durham county it is of the title of the film behind some trees.
This is different to my thriller title where it is behind the doors entering to the mental institution. However they have the same idea because they have the title behind something which is shown at the beginning and shown at the end.

The similarities compared to a conventions to real media shows how i have developed my thriller opening. Similar shots and ideas have been put into my thriller opening which is similar to the real media opening of Durham county.

Putting our thriller opening together

Putting out thriller opening together was a difficult task.
Originally we imagened it to be fairly simple but we were stumped from the first hurdle when we had to come up with a plan.
We all tried to give our own creative imput and try to include all of our ideas in a way that would not look messy or 'thrown together'.

Once we had the basic plan we sat down and did the storyboard, this involved thinking about fitting all of the shots into a two minute timeframe aswell as making it look appealing and getting a good variation of angles and effects.
Then we decided on the locations we we're going to use
